The original well was dug near what is now the intersection of Grapefruit Avenue and Fifth Street, in Coachella. Once the well was completed, the brothers began laying out a townsite. Several other financial backers were involved in the design and promotion of the new township. Together, the city developers decided to name the town Conchilla, meaning “Land of the Little Shells.” This name was to honor the large number of small shells that were found in the area.
A Mistake in Naming
An advertisement was designed and sent to the printers. The advertisement was meant to promote the new town and draw farmers and investors to the area to work and live. However, a mistake at the printers changed the spelling of the name of the town from “Conchilla” to “Coachella.” A reprinting o the advertisement would have delayed the announcement of the new opportunities in the Valley and the group of investors made a decision to simply adopt “Coachella” as the new name of the town so that they could proceed with the promotion.
The discovery of irrigation water in an otherwise arid region led many farmers to relocate to the Coachella Valley.
